Knowing how you can tie a tie among the most fundamental capabilities a man needs to know.
The way that your dad taught you in your youth is only the beginning. Based on your weight, height, and profession, the tie knot may be more suited to the stylish man.
In this article, I will break down five knots you can practice proving you’re an individual who’s not scared to experiment with something new and develop his style.
Four In Hand Knot:
- The tie should be tied around your collar. The thick end is on the left, about 3-4 inches higher than the thin end.
- Make sure to cross the thick end before the thin end.
- Wrap the thick end behind the thin end, then traverse horizontally from left to right.
- The thick end should be positioned to the side of the knot from left to left. Place a finger underneath the horizontal band.
- Then, turn the tip of the thick part upwards and then in, slipping it under the loop that wraps around your neck.
- Feed the thick end through the loop you’ve opened with your finger.
- Take the thick end completely through the loop before securing the knot tightly.
- Secure the knot by holding it while pulling on the thin end using the other hand.
Nicky Knot:
- Tie the necktie around your collar, with the seam to the left and the longer end to your left side approximately two inches lower than where you would like to be in the final position.
- The thick end should be crossed under the thin end, creating an X shape below your chin.
- The thick end should be flipped towards the loop that wraps around your collar. Tuck it through the loop, extending from the left side of the thin end.
- The edge of the thick end to the side of your knot. Slide your finger under the horizontal band you’ve made across in front of the knot.
- Take the top of the thick part upwards and under the loop on your collar.
- Place the tip of the thick end into the loop horizontally made in Step 4.
- Take the thick end to the fullest extent through the loop on the flat side and then tighten it.
- Adjust the knot by holding it in one hand and pulling it towards the narrower end of the tie using the other hand. As a vest bowtie, it looks great.
Pratt Knot:
- The tie should be tied over your collar with the seam facing forward and the large end hanging to your left, approximately 1-2 inches lower than your desired finish point.
- The thick end should be crossed under the thin end, creating an X below your chin.
- Go through the thick part of the loop.
- Take the thick end to the bottom and turn the tip towards your left.
- The thick end should be placed on the tie’s flat side (from right to left). Place a finger on the band that you made.
- Then, slide the longer end to the loop from beneath.
- Place the point of the thick part downwards to directly above that narrow edge.
- The thick end should be pulled down into the band horizontally. Make sure to secure it.
- Adjust the knot by grasping it with one hand and pulling it towards the narrow end using the other hand.
Plattsburgh Knot:
- Wrap the tie over your collar, leaving the seam visible and the long end to your left about 4-5 inches lower than your preferred ending position.
- It is a good idea to cross the large part of the tie beneath the narrow end to create an X. Secure the X and then flip the top of the thick end up to the loop’s front around your collar.
- Put the long end of your hair through the loop, then bring it back to your left-hand side.
- The thick end should be pointed upwards.
- Bring the thick end towards the loop, but stay to the left of the narrow end.
- Put the long end of the loop to the inside of the loop and emerge to your right.
- Bring the long end to the flat side of the knot, from right to left. Place a finger beneath the band that you have just made.
- Put the long end of your collar through the loop that wraps around your neck from the back.
- Feed the long end into the horizontal band and tighten it up.
- Make sure to tighten the knot by holding it in one hand while pulling the narrow end using the other. Make sure the edges are adjusted so that it appears like it is symmetrical.
Victoria Knot:
- Attach the Barry Wang Ties to your collar, with the seam facing upwards, and place the large end to your left, about 2-4 inches lower than the desired ending position.
- The large part of the tie is to the front of the narrower end and then to the back.
- Go over the thick part of the front in a row from right to left.
- Go through the thick end of the knot, from right to left.
- The thick end should be pushed across the front for a third time before slipping your finger underneath the new horizontal band that you’ve just made.
- Put the long string’s long end through the loop around your collar. It will come from beneath it.
- Feed the thick part down to the vertical band.
