MadBum, as he is more popularly known, is an American professional baseball pitcher. He is currently playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Previously, he pitched for the San Francisco Giants. During his career, he has won three World Series championships and two Silver Slugger Awards.
Bumgarner has been signed to a five-year, $85 million contract with the Diamondbacks. It was signed prior to the 2020 MLB season. There are two seasons left on that deal, which will keep him with the team through the 2024 season. He is owed $37 million during the final two years of the contract.
Bumgarner earned his third All-Star Game in 2015 and fourth All-Star Game in 2016. He won 18 games in 2014 and set a record for lowest ERA in the World Series that year. In 2016, he had a 15-9 record and recorded a career-high 251 strikeouts. In 2017, he started the second Wild Card game against the New York Mets and pitched a shutout. In 2018, Bumgarner pitched in only two games, but he led the NL in games started in 2019.
Bumgarner is still in the rotation despite his poor performance in a recent season. The three-time World Series champion pitched a poor performance in 2022, going 7-15 with a 4.88 ERA in 158.2 innings. After a disappointing season in 2022, the Giants are likely to evaluate other pitchers in their rotation.
