    Homework: A Complete Guide

    Homework is an integral part of every institution. The ERP of an institute uses homework, assignments, tests, and events as the most considered literacy activities to encourage student progress. The ERP full form is enterprise resource planning- it shapes a school’s curriculum and schedule for the year by holding homework on the priority list.

    During learning months in the past couple of years, the learning management system gained importance. Institutions posted everything over the LMS portal. Students could check the portal to see whether they have homework for the day and submit their work through the same medium. The homework pattern for online and offline classes might be different, but the goal is the same- to encourage learning.

    The basics of homework

    Homework comes in many forms. Teachers might ask primary school students to complete worksheets on pages a school provides. They mostly have easy to finish work because they are still in their learning stage. Reading, writing, and practicing dictation are the most common examples.

    Secondary school students have more complicated assignments, such as writing and research projects, math or science homework, etc. High school students don’t enjoy assignments because they have a very hectic schedule. Yet, they try to complete their assignments or homework as carefully as possible so it benefits their learning too.

    Does the homework benefit academic learning?

    For years there have been multiple debates on whether homework is helpful for academic learning students. There is not enough evidence to denote the same, but as students get older, the importance of homework increases. It links the understanding of a child to the actual absorption of information. Here are a few other benefits of homework;

    • Helps students be prepared for the next class.
    • Revision of content taught in classroom sessions.
    • Allows students to practice their skills.
    • Encourages creative learning methods.
    • They learn time management decision-making, and organizational skills by putting the homework in the best position on their priority-based To-Do List for the day.
    • Students understand the importance of time management and balance life according to it.

    Parents can also benefit from homework. Then some students have an already established form of learning through an assignment, they put in less effort and only focus on making their child complete the work. Moreover, parents also spend a lot of time bonding with their children by helping them complete their assignments.

    How to slot homework into a routine?

    Students have difficulty allotting a slot to their homework because they have other important things on the list too. Revising some subjects, preparing for upcoming examinations, participating in extracurricular activities, and other things also need attention besides homework. The method of allotting the right spot is different for students of different ages.

    Kindergarten and preschool students have a very short concentration span and need to work on the same piece of homework several times during the day. Because they don’t have a lot of academic pressure, this is possible to implement.

    Older students in middle school, and high school should always try to complete the homework as soon as they reach home. They have a fresh idea about the subject and details about the assignment and can use all this information to efficiently complete the work. Procrastinating decreases the quality of an assignment. Waiting too late in the day makes them rush, giving them anxiety. Having a regular schedule for everyday work completion is the best method suited for high school and middle school students.

    The right space

    Students cannot just sit anywhere to complete their homework. the type of environment around them influences the quality of work. A good place to complete homework is somewhere that has;

    • Minimum distractions
    • Enough space to spread out copies, books, and other stationery items
    • It is bright but not blinding.
    • Good quality air
    • Not noisy yet not entirely silent
    • Younger students prefer working with their parents. Hence any environment is suited for them as long as there is a support factor.
    • Viewing homework positively

    Students should view homework positively and not in a negative light as a waste of time. Subconsciously, they spend more time learning and indulging in academic content by completing assignments. Remaining in a constant learning flow through homework outside a school environment will help students keep the learning mindset. With time, they develop intellectual values too.
